New to the site and super pumped, my BYD car will be arriving soon! I’ve been reading up on the features, but I’m still a bit confused about how the whole SIM card and mobile data thing works. Hoping someone here can help me figure it out.

I hear the car comes with a SIM card for OTA updates, navigation, emergency SOS, and the app. Does it cover stuff like Spotify or other apps that need data? I hear you get 1.5GB of data per month for the first two years. That seems like it could run out fast if more than just car stuff is using it.

Does anyone know what happens after those two years? Do you have to pay for a plan, and if so, what kind of costs are we looking at?

I was thinking about just using my phone as a hotspot for the car, for updates and daily use. If I do that, would things like updates and satnav switch to using my phone’s data instead of the car’s SIM? That sounds like a good way to save the car’s data, but I’m not sure if it works that way.

For anyone already driving a BYD, how’s the SIM data been working out for you? Does 1.5GB last, or do you find yourself needing to connect to Wi-Fi or a hotspot? Just trying to figure out what works best.

Thanks for any advice! Looking forward to hearing how you all are managing it.

While it does have a limited data allowance, it is not ideal for streaming music or videos. The 1.5GB of data per month is usually sufficient for basic car functions, but if you intend to stream a lot of media, you may want to consider a different option.

Congrats on the new BYD... Yeah using your phone as a hotspot is a pretty smart way to save data. After two years, you’ll likely need to pay for the SIM plan, and the costs vary by region.

I’ve been managing fine with the 1.5GB for essentials like maps and updates, but streaming music could burn through it fast. Using your phone’s hotspot is a great backup plan, especially for road trips when you want music and nav without worrying about limits. After the free period, the data plan cost isn’t too bad, but keeping a hotspot as your main data source could definitely help avoid extra charges.

I have just ordered a 4 month-old demo car from BYD Dealer in Sweden. I have same questions about SIM plan and changing SIM card. I have understood that in Sweden I will get 1.0 GB per month during the first two years. And this is required to lock/unlock/start the car via app.

But I also have learned that you can't swap the SIM since the SIM ICC nbr is tied to the app and/or car.

What I wonder is, if it is possible to change to other SIM card and what updates needs to be done?
What happens if I drive outside Sweden, is roaming working for the SIM card that is in there? Maybe it does within EU, but what if we go outside EU? We do that from time to time...

What options are there to use own SIM card or from own mobile being in e.g. North Macedonia (outside EU)?

Please help me to provide some info. What happens beyond the first 2 years, might also be of interest. If the provided plan is very expensive, I would like to have a private option and still use the app.

To summarize:
  • How to change SIM card.
  • Use private mobile data (shared from private mobile) instead of SIM plan.
  • What happens after the first two years?

Data can be tricky. The car's SIM card is mostly for updates, navigation, and emergencies. 1.5GB probably won't cover things like Spotify. After two years, you might have to pay for a data plan. Using your phone as a hotspot is a good way to save the car's data, but it'll use your phone's data and battery. 1.5GB might not be enough, so lots of people use hotspots or Wi-Fi. See how much data you use when you get the car and figure out what works best. Watch your data usage!

Congrats on the new BYD! If you're concerned about data usage, you could try using Bluetooth and let your smartphone handle things like music and navigation. That way, the car’s SIM card is just handling the essentials, and your phone can take care of the streaming and app usage. It's a great way to save on data! You’ll still be able to enjoy everything without burning through that 1.5GB too quickly.

Can you do "the essentials" with using Bluetooth and hotspot in a way?
I still haven't received the car, hopefully tomorrow or during the week, so I will explore and inform...

What seem certain is that the SIM card from BYD already mounted in the car, has an ID nbr (ICC ID) and that is linked to the car. So you can't just change the SIM card and expect it to work.

Congrats on the BYD! Getting a new car is always exciting! Yeah, the whole SIM card thing can be a bit confusing. You're right, 1.5GB can disappear fast if you're streaming anythng. Using your phone as a hotspot is definitely a smart move. Most systems will switch to your phone's data if it's available, but it's worth checking the BYD manual or forums to be sure. As for after the two years, that's a good question! I'd definitely ask your dealerr about the data plan options and costs. It's a common concern with connected cars.
